New Zealand to Adelaide Flights Soar
The State Government has welcomed Air New Zealand’s
announcement that its flights between Adelaide and Auckland will
double by early 2008.
The international airline has announced it will offer daily flights
between the two cities from February, 2008. The flight increases
will be staged, with six flights per week commencing in November
this year, followed by the extra flight in February, 2008.
Acting Tourism Minister Paul Caica says the announcement is great news
for the State’s tourism industry and has been fuelled by strong
growth in international visitor numbers to South Australia.
“Since direct Auckland-Adelaide flights began, there has been a 37 per
cent increase in New Zealand residents arriving into Adelaide by
air,” he says.
“New Zealand is Australia’s number one source of international tourists,
and the Auckland to Adelaide route is South Australia’s chance to
capitalise on the lucrative New Zealand market.
“Overall, statistics show South Australia welcomed more international
visitors during 2006 than ever before.
“The latest International Visitor Survey shows South Australia attracted
a record 364,700 international visitors in the 12 months ended
December 2006 – up 9 per cent on the previous 12-month period.
“The number of nights spent in our State by international visitors
during 2006 also climbed – up 12 per cent on the previous 12 months
to 7.1 million.
“We are outstripping national growth in international tourist numbers.
“The South Australian Government has been working hard to increase
international airline access to the State, with the tourism industry
reaping the benefits.
“We will continue to work with international airlines such as Air New
Zealand to encourage extra flights into Adelaide, and promote South
Australia’s brilliant blend of world-class tourism attractions to
the overseas market,” Minister Caica says.
