Murray River Open For Business
After widespread rains across Australia and improved flows
into the Upper Murray, the South Australian section of the Murray
River is in great shape as a holiday destination.
In recent months there has been a perception that dry conditions across
the country meant river levels were too low for houseboats and other
holiday activities along South Australia’s Murray River.
To turn around this perception, tourism operators are working together
to let holidaymakers know that the South Australian section of the
Murray River is open for business.
Mr Jim Murphy, owner of Quality Houseboats based at Blanchetown in the
Riverland and at Mannum in the Murraylands, says the perception of
low water levels is having a damaging effect on the State’s
houseboat industry, as well as community’s along the River.
“We need to push the message that the Murray River is open for business
and there is plenty of water for houseboating and all types of water
sports,” says Mr Murphy.
“A houseboat holiday does not need to be based entirely around water
activities,” says Mr Murphy.
“Towns along the river also offer some fantastic holiday experiences for
houseboat guests. Moor at Renmark for a game of golf, embark on a
camel safari from Waikerie, and check out the PS Marion at Mannum.
These are just a few of the many things that guests can do along the
river.”
Murraylands Regional Marketing Manager Caroline Phillips says the Murray
River is one of the world’s great rivers and an iconic South
Australian holiday destination.
“Whether you want to spend a few days on an historic paddle-wheeler,
travel down the river on a houseboat or enjoy a short scenic cruise,
the Murray River offers it all,” Ms Phillips says.
“South Australia is also fortunate to have one of the most modern and
luxurious houseboat fleets in Australia. There is nowhere else in
the country where you can cruise a river with such exceptional
on-water accommodation options.”
Riverland Tourism Marketing Manager Emily White says South Australia’s
system of locks and weirs maintain a consistent level of water
throughout the South Australian section of the Murray River,
guaranteeing suitable water levels for houseboating and water sports
at all times of the year.
“The Murray is particularly beautiful at this time of year and visitors
can take advantage of some exceptional deals, discounts and free
nights as part of the current Recharge and Brilliant Murray River
campaign,” says Ms White.
Tourism operators are confident they will see a turn around in bookings
with many offering new tours such as Odyssey River Cruises’
seven-day Mannum to Morgan tour incorporating the Barossa Valley.
