Five-time Tour de France winner, Miguel Indurain, will be honoured at next year’s Tour Down Under. Spanish born Miguel will make his first visit to Adelaide for the 2008 event, and the attendance of this cycling legend further cements the Tour Down Under’s international standing in the lead up to Union Cycliste Internationale’s decision on whether to grant it ProTour status in September. The dates of the 2008 Clipsal 500 Adelaide have been announced. The next South Australian round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series is to be held 21-24 February and tickets for the event are on sale now. Spectacular support races, more on-circuit attractions and improved spectator facilities including more shade and a bigger concert line-up have already been planned for the 2008 Clipsal 500 Adelaide. Rick Allert AM, currently Chair of Coles Group Limited, will become the new Chair of Tourism Australia, replacing Mr Tim Fischer AC. Tourism Minister Fran Bailey said Rick Allert would bring a strong commercial focus to the Board of Tourism Australia, with more than 40 years of business experience.

Adelaide Airport has received another major award for its new $260 million terminal building, this time from the Property Council of Australia. The airport’s Terminal 1 precinct received the Jones Lang Lasalle Award for Innovation and Excellence in Emerging Assets at the Property Council of Australia’s annual awards last month. Earlier this year, Adelaide Airport was named the world’s second best airport in the 5-15 million passengers category at the Airports Council International 2006 awards for service quality. Following the completion of the terminal, Adelaide Airport has recorded the highest passenger growth of all major Australian airports in 2005/06, and has surpassed 6 million passengers per annum for the first time.

A baby platypus has been sighted by a guide at Mylor’s Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary – an extremely rare and exciting occurrence. Warrawong is home to the world's leading Platypus breeding and research program and is the only place in the world to repeatedly breed Platypus in captivity. Hilton Adelaide has announced the appointment of Gina Liew, chef Cheong Liew’s daughter, as restaurant manager of the Grange Restaurant. South Australia’s XO Supper Club has taken out top honours at this year’s Australian Service Excellence Awards, held by the Customer Service Institute of Australia (CSIA). The restaurant’s co-owner Kristian Livolsi was presented with a South Australian award for Outstanding Excellence in Customer Service in the Small Business Category at a gala ceremony in Sydney Last month.

The State Theatre Company of South Australia has been nominated in three categories for the 2007 Helpmann Awards. Company Associate Director Michael Hill has been nominated for Best Direction of Play for Waiting for Godot. Cameron Goodall is vying for Best Male Actor in a Play award for his portrayal of Hamlet, while Sean Taylor is up for Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Play for playing Astrov in Uncle Vanya. The Award winners will be announced on 6 August.

McLaren Vale’s d’Arenberg has been crowned Winery of the Year for the Southern Hemisphere at the Critic’s Challenge International Wine Competition in the US. A panel of the US’s most highly regarded wine writers and critics awarded d’Arenberg three gold and six silver medals during the competition. Other South Australian wine producers to be awarded either Critic’s Gold or Silver Awards included Jacobs Creek, Knappstein, Murray Street Wines, Penley Estate, Petaluma, Peter Lehman, St Hallett, Wakefield (Taylors Wines), Wynn’s Coonawarra and Yangarra Estate.

Local artist Dagny Strand has installed her amazing sculptures in Zema Estate’s Coonawarra vineyard. The sculptures depict vine pruners, who appear to have grown out of the vines themselves. Visitors can take a tour of the vineyard to admire the sculptures and learn more about viticulture. Hentley Farm’s The Beast Shiraz 2005 has taken top honours at the largest consumer judging of shiraz in Australia this year. Seven hundred discerning punters judged 260 shiraz during the Great Edinburgh Shiraz Challenge 2007. Visitors can now hear the real stories of the people and places along the Oodnadatta Track with the release of a new CD. The Living Oodnadatta Track CD is designed to be listened to as visitors drive along the track, enriching their understanding of its rich history and significance. The 600km Oodnadatta Track, in the State’s far north, follows an ancient Aboriginal trade route, the Overland Telegraph Line, the path of explorer John McDouall Stuart and the Old Ghan Railway Line. Adelaide’s The Apothecary 1878 has been nominated for Wine Bar of the Year by Australian Bartender magazine. This is the fourth nomination Apothecary 1878 has received in this category. They are up against popular interstate rivals Melbourne Supper Club and Gazebo Wine Garden of Sydney. Also recognised is long serving employee Matthew Kemp. Matthew has been nominated in the Bartender of the Year category and will compete with 80 contenders from around Australia for the top prize. The award winners will be announced in September.

As part of the 2007 SALA Festival, Adelaide’s BMGART Gallery will present an exhibition of contrasting works by two young South Australian artists: Jason Cordero paints landscapes so real you could almost walk into them, while Nicholas Uhlmann creates thought-provoking sculptures to set the imagination on a journey. The stunning works of both artists will be exhibited at BMGART, 31-33 North Street, Adelaide, from 10 August to 1 September.
