Events: This MonthWHALE WATCHING SEASON Until 31 October Each year between June and October, giant Southern Right Whales return to South Australia’s waters. It is estimated that only 3000 Southern Right Whales exist in the world, making viewing of these splendid creatures a memorable occasion. With up to 100 Southern Right Whales frolicking just metres from the towering Bunda Cliffs, Head of Bight on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula is one of the best places in the world to see the annual breeding migration of these awesome creatures. Another excellent place for whale spotting is Encounter Bay on the Fleurieu Peninsula, where Southern Right Whales breed and calve in waters very near the shore. Click here for more information. ROYAL ADELAIDE SHOW 7 - 15 Sep 2007 Roll up for all the colour, fun and excitement of this iconic Adelaide event. Scare yourself silly on the Mad Mouse roller coaster, marvel at the fireworks or make friends with a piglet at the Farmyard Nursery. There’s live music and entertainment, old favourites such as show jumping and wood chopping to enjoy in the main arena, plus a whole hall full of showbags to delight the kids. Click here for more information. RIVERLAND FIELD DAYS 19 - 20 Sep 2007 The Riverland Field Days are an agricultural and horticultural expo and a fun family day out. There’s lots of the latest machinery for the farmers, plus everthing from crafts to clothes for everyone else. Enjoy the cooking demonstrations and special band performances. Sit back and let the local schools and colleges entertain you with special live performances, then get along to one of the many food and drink halls for a delicious lunch or snack. This inaugural event will feature remarkable performances from some of Australia's most eminent artists. You’ll find plenty of enthralling live performances in world-class venues, a nationally important visual arts program and a rich exchange of ideas in the inaugural OzAsia Symposium. YORKE PENINSULA FIELD DAYS 25 - 27 Sep 2007 The Yorke Peninsula Field Days are acknowledged as the first and longest-running field days in Australia, and they aim to celebrate our rich farming culture. The three-day biennial event provides our farmers and their families with access to the latest innovations in agricultural machinery. The Field Days’ emphasis is on exhibitions, demonstrations and displays for rural industries, but there’s also a lot of general displays intended to be of interest to both rural and urban families. STINKY CREEK FOLK FESTIVAL 28 Sep - 1 Oct 2007 This festival offers a weekend of music, song, dance and fun for all ages, bringing together acoustic musicians from the Eyre Peninsula and around Australia. Whatever your musical taste, you’ll find something to love here – check out Celtic music, bush dance, belly dance, poetry, song-writing, folk and ballads and sea shanties. The event sees restaurant owners, vignerons and foodies team up with local artists for a series of small events in wineries and restaurants, showcasing the very best culture the Island has to offer. MOONTA OPEN GARDEN AND CRAFT FESTIVAL 29 Sep - 01 Oct 2007 This is a lovely weekend events, featuring beautiful gardens, great markets and lots of craft. It’s also an excellent excuse to explore the historic region around Moonta. Visit the Moonta Mines, Moonta Bay, Port Hughes and Yelta. Stroll around the gardens, relax over a leisurely afternoon tea, and browse the plants and product, art exhibitions and trading tables. The Craft Festival will be held at the Moonta Town Hall, featuring demonstrations of wool spinning, machine embroidery, wood burning and scroll-sawing. You can also buy home-made jams, pickles, chocolates, biscuits and cakes to take not to miss the Art Exhibition and Leadlighting display, also in the town hall. Click here for more information.
