There’s now another reason to take a holiday on Yorke Peninsula, with the launch of this year’s ‘Boat Load of Fun’ campaign. Almost 130 local businesses from 25 towns across the region are involved in this year’s competition, with a total prize pool of more than $26,500. The winner of the Boat Load of Fun competition will take home a boat and prize package worth in excess of $15,000, or one of four consolation prizes of three nights accommodation. The Art Gallery of South Australia has recorded an outstanding year of achievements, ending 2006/07 with unprecedented levels of self-raised funds and increased high visitation, bolstered by the blockbuster exhibition, Egyptian Antiquities from the Louvre. A total 536,865 people visited the Art Gallery of South Australia during the last financial year – the highest attendance in eight years and the second highest in its 126 year history. The history of surf lifesaving in Australia and the joys and dangers of the beach are explored in a new exhibition on show at the South Australian Maritime Museum (at 126 Lipson St, Port Adelaide) from September 1 to November 11. Between the Flags: 100 Years of Surf Lifesaving traces the proud history of the surf lifesaving movement, which emerged in 1907. A century after the formation of the movement that became Surf Life Saving Australia, members have made over 500,000 rescues across Australia’s 11,000 beaches. The exhibition celebrates the lifesavers who have made our beaches safer places, helped Australians to enjoy the surf and played a role in creating Australia’s beach culture. South Australia’s Flinders Ranges will be a Mecca for artists, enthusiasts and collectors during the 2007 Flinders Ranges… a brush with art festival. The Festival showcases nearly 20 exhibitions and galleries – from Jamestown in the south to Lyndhurst in the north – and represents a diverse range of media including painters, potters, sculptors, textile artists, jewellers and photographers. The event provides the ideal opportunity for visitors to experience the exceptional talent and the stunning scenery which has inspired these artists. Flinders Ranges… a brush with art opens on Saturday 8 September and will run until Sunday 4 November. Seven events staged in the Fleurieu Peninsula are set to benefit from $48,500 in funding from the State Government in 2007/08. The funding has been allocated via the South Australian Tourism Commission’s events arm, Events South Australia, as part of the Regional Events and Festivals Program and Community Events Development Fund. Fleurieu Peninsula events to be provided with funding this financial year include Jazz on the Bremer, Compass Cup – Australia’s Only Cow Race, Middleton Jazz Fest, Fleurieu Folk Festival, Fiesta!, Fleurieu Peninsula Biennale and SA Wooden Boat & Music Festival 09. Across the State, 87 regional events will share in nearly $600,000 in funding from the State Government through the Events South Australia’s Regional Events and Festivals Program and Community Events Development Fund in 2007/08. The Department for Environment and Heritage has produced a new section on its website to highlight significant built and maritime heritage sites in South Australia. Available at www.environment.sa.gov.au, ‘Showcasing SA Heritage Places’ contains a virtual treasure trove of information including highlights and latest entries in the SA Heritage Register, highlights of the SA Shipwrecks Database, and heritage places celebrating significant anniversaries in 2007. The site also offers virtual glimpses of onsite interpretation panels that tell visitors the stories of some of South Australia’s unique heritage places, including the Birdsville and Strzelecki Tracks, the Oodnadatta Track, and the Kanyaka Homestead ruins in the Southern Flinders Ranges. Tour Down Under will again travel through the Barossa in 2008 with Angaston to host the Stage 1 finish on Tuesday, 22 January. The 129km stage from Mawson Lakes to Angaston will travel via Gawler, Lyndoch, Rowland Flat, and Tanunda, before completing two laps of a circuit through Seppeltfield, Greenock Nuriootpa and Angaston. There will be two sprints during the stage at Lyndoch and Nuriootpa. Complementing this stage will be the first of three stages of the Classic Veterans Race Series on the roads between Angaston, Keyneton, and Eden Valley. Starting at 9.30am more than 200 licensed cyclists aged over 35 years will take part. Half a million people are expected to line South Australian roads over the six-day event to cheer on almost 100 superstars international cycling circuit of this prestigious early season race. In a major boost for the State’s economy and the meeting and events industry, Adelaide has won the right to host the 2009 Meeting & Events Australia (MEA) National Conference. Projects aimed at strengthening tourism in the Fleurieu Peninsula region have received a $100,000 funding boost from the State Government. Two projects, worth almost $1.4 million, will receive grants through the South Australian Tourism Commission’s (SATC) Tourism Development Fund. Funding of $50,000 will go to upgrade the former McLaren Vale Visitors Centre to create a new McLaren Vale Regional Food & Wine Centre. The new centre will incorporate space for workshops and retail activity, as well as providing tours and a booking centre for visitors to the region. Meanwhile, $50,000 in funding will assist the upgrade of the McLaren Vale Coast to Vines Rail Trail. The upgrade will involve linking sections of the trail and installing appropriate infrastructure, such as signage, seating and surfacing.
