Bill Spurr has been announced as the 2007 recipient of the SA Great Tourism South Australian of the Year Award. Mr Spurr was awarded for his significant contribution to tourism, events and education in South Australia over 20 years. His personal contribution went way beyond his role of Chief Executive of the South Australian Tourism Commission – a position from which he retired in the middle of 2007. His leadership benefited the state through such events as the World Police Fire Games and World Solar Challenge. His other past roles include Executive Director of the Australian Hotels Association, Head of Adelaide TAFE Centre for Tourism Studies and Executive Director of the Adelaide Convention and Tourism Authority. The 2008 Adelaide Hills Visitor Guide will be launched on Monday, 3 December by the region’s tourism ambassador, TV presenter Catriona Rowntree. The launch of the 2008 guide comes as visitor numbers to the Adelaide Hills are on the rise, with a 22 per cent increase in domestic visitor numbers and a 39 per cent increase in international visitor numbers record for the 2007 financial year compared to 12 months ago. Demand for the Adelaide Hills Visitor Guide has grown so quickly that 100,000 copies are being printed this year – a 25 per cent increase from 2007. Hot on the heels of the announcement that South Australia’s Tour Down Under will become part of the world’s UCI ProTour cycling series, another major event sponsor has been welcomed on board. Property and construction company Hindmarsh's sponsorship of the first-ever UCI ProTour race to be held outside of Europe adds another business industry sector to the event’s sponsorship portfolio. The Tour Down Under’s Most Aggressive jersey will now be known as the Hindmarsh Most Aggressive Rider’s jersey, awarded to the rider who is judged to have instigated the most attacks, breakaways, or assisted their teammates to the best advantage during each stage. A South Australian winemaker has been crowned Winemaker of the Year at one of the most prestigious wine competitions in the world. Michael Fragos, chief winemaker at McLaren Vale’s Chapel Hill winery, won the Wolf Blass Trophy for “Winemaker of the Year” at London’s highly-acclaimed 2008 International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC). One of the State’s most popular tourist regions, the Barossa, will be in the spotlight from 10-12 September next year, when the Australian Regional Tourism Convention heads to South Australia for the first time. Up to 200 delegates will converge on the Barossa during the event, which will focus on leadership, partnerships, sustainability and regional prosperity – issues relevant to the Barossa and other South Australian regional destinations. One of the Art Gallery of South Australia’s most generous donors, Diana Ramsay AO has unveiled her latest gift to the state art collection: Diana and her nymphs bathing, c.1778-87 is an important oil painting by Angelica Kauffmann, one of the most influential artists of the late eighteenth century in Europe.
