VIVONNE BAY ON KANGAROO ISLAND Proclaimed the 'best beach' in Australia after extensive research by Sydney University and it's not hard to work out why. The long, curved, sandy beach is a superb site for picnics, beachcombing, surfing and fishing. Experienced surfers enjoy the wonderful turquoise waters. Fishing from the jetty, beach, boat or the Harriet River mouth is excellent. The beach can be reached by taking the road just past the Vivonne Bay store. Safe swimming areas can be found near the jetty and boat ramp, or the sandy-bottomed Harriet River that enters the bay nearby. On the other side of the river, Point Ellen provides photographers with spectacular views of the Southern Ocean sending its waves crashing onto the cliff-face. Vivonne Bay is the only safe harbour on the south coast of Kangaroo Island and is the base for crayfishing boats from November to May. Barbecue and picnic areas, toilets, camping. VICTOR HARBOR AND PORT ELLIOT ON THE FLEURIEU PENINSULA Port Elliot, one of the loveliest coastal villages in South Australia, sits tightly clustered around Horseshoe Bay, a small but perfect swimming beach, while Victor Harbor, on the wide, sandy arc of Encounter Bay, has all the facilities of a regional centre yet still manages to combine a well-weathered sense of history with brighter and newer tourist attractions. LUCKY BAY ON EYRE PENINSULA A popular spot with a safe swimming beach for children. Lovely sandy beach that is great for swimming, fishing or just relaxing. This is a favourite getaway spot for locals too, with many owning holiday shacks that overlook the beach. During the Christmas holidays there is a shop open daily. A daily car and passenger ferry departs from Lucky Bay travelling to Wallaroo on the Yorke Peninsula. Lucky Bay is 16kms north of Cowell. For more information on Eyre Peninsula beaches click here.
PORT VICTORIA ON YORKE PENINSULA A haven for beach lovers with a number of beaches suited for any activity. Dolphins are often frolicking in the bay at Port Victoria, and can be seen from the beach and the jetty. The foreshore beach, affectionately known by locals at the "Caravan Beach", due to it being located next to the caravan park on Port Victoria's foreshore, is a calm beach for children. Further along the coast is "Rifle Butts Beach", named because this is the location used for rifle practice during World War One, and spent shells can still be found in the sandhills. This beach is considered a little gem by locals, and is the best for children. Continuing along the coastline is Second Beach, a gentle sloping beach; great for fossicking for seashells, and seeing pelicans laze on the beach or glide through the air. To access this beach, drive along behind the sandhills on a track that has been prepared by the local Council and ends in a parking area. Further south again is Third Beach; with lovely smooth rocks, this beach is another great spot at Port Victoria. For more information on Yorke Peninsula beaches click here.
