South Australian tourism operators and stakeholders are being urged to take an active role in shaping the industry’s future by contributing to the new South Australian Tourism Plan. The new plan will drive the industry and provide a positive framework for growth helping SA reach the tourism target of $6.3 billion in tourism expenditure by 2014. With not even 12 months’ trading under its belt, the Lobethal Bierhaus has scooped up five awards at the Australian International Beer Awards held in Melbourne recently. The biggest event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, the brewery picked up a bronze award for their American style Pale Ale, a silver award for a Porter style beer, and three silver medals for their innovative packaging. Five beers are now on offer at the Lobethal Bierhaus: an American style Pale Ale, IPA, Porter, Pilsner and Hefeweizen (each on tap and in bottles). Harbour Town Adelaide has announced plans to expand its brand direct shopping precinct in Adelaide’s booming western suburbs. Capital works have commenced on the development, part of a major expansion of what is already the State’s biggest outlet shopping destination, adding up to 30 more shops to the precinct. In addition to local shoppers, Harbour Town attracts national and international visitors and this expansion will ensure demand for a broader shopping experience is met. Significant interest from high-profile retailers has already been received and is expected to continue as the construction takes shape. Appellation, in the Barossa, has announced the expansion of its popular nightly tasting menu and the monthly ‘Best of Barossa’ tasting program for the remainder of 2008. One of Appellation’s key offerings, the ‘Best of Barossa Tasting Menu’ is available nightly in addition to the a la carte menu. Updated monthly, the tasting will feature wines of more than five-dozen local producers, which so far this year has included wineries based in the Barossa sub regions of Seppeltsfield Road, Krondorf Road and Lyndoch. Using the wines as a starting point, Chef Mark McNamara creates a nine-course food menu incorporating the best seasonally available produce to create a highly memorable dining experience. The Adelaide Festival Centre, home of the performing arts in South Australia, has announced an exciting program for the eighth annual Adelaide Cabaret Festival, to be held from 6 -14 June, 2008. This year's program features ten brand new shows and five international performances exclusive to Adelaide. The Mitsubishi production process has been recorded for posterity by the History Trust of South Australia. In the past months the Trust has commissioned a filmmaker and oral historian to film the assembly line in operation and record the memories of workers at the plant. The film and extracts from the oral history interviews will feature in exhibitions at the National Motor Museum in Birdwood, alongside the Mitsubishi 380, and may also be used in other exhibitions about South Australia’s industrial past. Both the film and the interviews will be placed on the Trust’s web site. The Trust aims to exhibit these collections in the near future. More information: www.history.sa.gov.au
Ms Judy Potter, Chair of the 2010 National Games Board, recently announced the dates for the Special Olympics Australia IX National Games to be held in Adelaide. Up to 1,200 athletes with an intellectual disability will travel to South Australia for a week of competition, social activities and general fellowship from April 18 – 24, 2010. Special Olympics is an international organisation dedicated to empowering individuals with an intellectual disability to become physically fit, productive and respected members of their community through sports training and competition. It’s an international program of sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with an intellectual disability. Games organisers are currently working on confirming a location for a Special Olympics Village that will accommodate, cater for, entertain and provide an event hub for all participants.
